The best approach is to use payroll software.  Payroll software automatically calculates net pay, Federal, Social Security, Medicare, state and local payroll taxes.  Payroll Mate is a nice software that allows the user to fully customize income, tax and deductions to their needs. This includes 401K deductions that may or may not be a pre- tax deduction.
